I’m sure that headline sounds counter-intuitive, but it’s true. Everyone knows about the affinity between key members of the New England Patriots and President Trump. But if history is any guide, if Trump is to be defeated next year, Tom Brady is going to have to win another Super Bowl on Sunday.
Going back to 1975, every time the team from the AFC has won the Super Bowl in the year before the presidential election, there has been a change in power at the White House the following year.
SUPER BOWL YEAR | AFC WINNER | PRESIDENTIAL RESULT THE FOLLOWING YEAR |
---|---|---|
1975 | Pittsburgh Steelers | Jimmy Carter (D) succeeds Republican president |
1979 | Pittsburgh Steelers | Ronald Reagan (R) succeeds Democratic president |
1999 | Denver Broncos | George W. Bush (R) succeeds Democratic president |
2007 | Indianapolis Colts | Barack Obama (D) succeeds Republican president |
2015 | New England Patriots | Donald Trump (R) succeeds Democratic president |
