The answer?  1940.  President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s nominee for vice president, Henry Wallace, failed to help FDR carry Wallace’s home state of Iowa.  And Republican VP nominee Charles McNary, the Senate minority leader from Oregon, didn’t help Wendell Willkie carry his home state as well.
