Episode #245: Counting Down to the Midterms

The primaries — which began in Texas in March and ended last week in New York — have produced some interesting stories, fascinating characters and crucial matchups for November.  NPR’s Ron Elving tells us what we learned during the primary season and offers some observations about who benefits on Election Day.

We have reports on the two Republican House members who are seeking re-election even though they are under indictment.  Jill Castellano, an investigative reporter with inewsource in San Diego, discusses the situation involving Rep. Duncan Hunter; and Randy Gorbman, the news director at WXXI in Rochester, N.Y., reviews the decision by Rep. Chris Collins, who has reversed his earlier decision and now intends to seek re-election.

And Wayne Slater, formerly of the Dallas Morning News and now a politics professor at the University of Texas, discusses the phenomenon known as Beto O’Rourke, the progressive congressman who is exciting Democrats in the Lone Star State and elsewhere.  But O’Rourke still is thought to have an uphill fight to unseat GOP Sen. Ted Cruz.
